Making Your Own Dried Fruit

Author: Fresh_Foods
Deni-food-dehydrator

Food dehydrators are simple kitchen appliances that are designed to drastically lessen the amount of water contained in any given food. The water is most often removed by placing the food within the dehydrator where it is exposed to heat over long periods of time. People typically use these food dehydrators in order to keep food that would otherwise rot or go bad in a short amount of time.

For that reason, the most common food items to be placed in a dehydrator are various kinds of fruit. The resulting dried fruit is perfect for storing for long periods of time and placing on oatmeal or cereal in the morning. Dried fruits and nuts also make an easy and convenient mix of snacks to take on hikes or other high energy activities. Dried fruit is a healthy, high energy snack, and this makes it ideal for building up energy before a run or replenishing your energy after some intense trekking.

There are some kitchen gadgets that make life harder for you. These are better off left untouched in the shelves for the next couple of years. However, once in awhile you discover an amazing kitchen gadget that leaves you in awe. You marvel at it and can’t stop talking about it. You purchase it and couldn’t wait to try it at home.

This is what happened to me when I saw the Victorio food strainer. It was love at first sight. My turf is in the kitchen and I spend most of my waking hours preparing food for my family. I love making sauces and salsas, which are actually my specialty. Just recently I decided to get out of my comfort zone and venture into selling bottled sauces. The strainer has been the perfect kitchen assistant. Not once did it fail me. Doing something I love and earning from it, what more can I ask for?

An Idea for Leftovers

Author: Gary Palmer

Vacuum Sealing Leftovers

If leftovers come and go quickly with no spoilage and little waste, then all may be well.  But if they tend to develop the “grey fuzzies” then there is a popular food storage/food preservation tool that just might come to your aid.  Vacuum Sealers.  Extend refrigerator life by providing air tight seals to your food.  It’s also possible to divide those leftovers into meal size preparation for boil-in-a-bag or microwave-in-a-bag preparation.  You could even save several such meals in the freezer for an even longer food storage life.

Is Steam Canning Safe?

Author: Gary Palmer

There are many people who love their steam canners.  However, some doubt the safety of the method.  The USDA remains on the fence.  It will not list it as being safe, but it will also not say that it is not safe.  According to the agency, the jury is still out, even though there are a great many canning experts who have now thrown their support behind the method.

In any case, for those who are uncertain as to whether they should opt for water bath canning or steam canning, there is now a new alternative.  They can choose the new dual use canner which can do both.  It’s easy to convert from one method to the other.

Once again, if you but look for them, surprising options can sometimes come to light.

If your cholesterol and triglyceride levels are high and your physician has told you to change your lifestyle, then it’s about time you do something about it. First off, it is never too late to start a healthy diet. Ditch the greasy steaks and burgers. Aim for the greens. Green leafy vegetables and fruits in season are high in fiber. They can effectively lower your bad cholesterol. If you find it such a hassle to chop all the veggies for a salad, then get a salad shooter. This amazing kitchen gadget will do the slicing and shredding for you. Choose a dressing that is light such as a vinaigrette dressing.

Aside from eating healthier, make exercise a part of your life. Consult with a fitness trainer or your physician on what exercise regimen would work for you. You’ll see positive results in just a few weeks of keeping fit.

Extending the Life of Your Food Storage Appliances

Recognize the item depicted above?

It’s not simply a funnel.  It’s a replacement hopper for a food strainer / sauce maker.  If you don’t own a sauce maker, then that may not mean much to you, but if you do, then this should remind you that replacement parts are available.

When we think replacement parts, many are prone to think merely of rubber gaskets, filters, or other parts that tend to wear out through the normal wear and tear of everyday use.  Hoppers, on the other hand, would not be something that you would expect to gradually lose their usefulness.  The same can be said for other pieces on other small kitchen appliances.

Yet, they can break.  An unintentional bang, smash or drop can do them in.  Then what do you do? Is it time to discard that once handy appliance?  The answer is, “not necessarily.”

There may be replacement parts available for those pieces that break or become lost.  A search might be advisable if you wish to contine using an otherwise perfectly usable machine.

Grow Sprouts Not Fungus

Author: Gary Palmer

If you are having difficulties with fungus when trying to grow sprouts, the problem may lie in the equipment rather than the seeds that you are using.  Try sterilizing your sprouter.  Actually, that is something that should be scheduled every so often between crops.

Also, make sure you are actually seeing fungus.  The tiny, fuzzy looking, root hairs that sometimes appear may give you the wrong impression.

For persistent problems check with the experts.  There are lots of sprouting forums on line, with a lot of good advice available.  There you will find those who are willing and able to address specific concerns.
