Saving Money with Food Storage Tools

Author: Gary Palmer

Use a little imagination when it comes to your food storage tools.  They can be used to save you money as well as save your food.

overripe bananas

Consider the overripe banana.  It’s not much good on cereal, as an addition to your fruit salad, as a tasty addition to a dish of ice-cream, or simply to be peeled and eaten.  It has outlived its period of usefulness.  It might be okay for making banana bread or banana muffins, or something similar, but you might not always want to make banana bread or banana muffins. It looks like the garbage or compost bin might be the only realistic option.

But wait!

Bring out your steam juicer.  Bananas make for an unusual fruit juice.  Instead of discarding them, peel those overripe bananas and steam them.  You’ll soon have a rich banana concentrate that is perfect for milk shakes and exotic drinks.  Even the leftover pulp need not be wasted.  Turn now to your food dehydrator, and use it to produce a tasty, nutritious fruit leather.

Use your imagination and do some research, and you might just find a great many other money saving ideas that can pertain to your food storage equipment.

The Blender Bottle Does It All

Author: Gary Palmer

Some have called the Blender Bottle the “World’s best portable mixer,” and it’s easy to see why. It’s a no battery, no cord, no hassle mixer / blender / smoothie maker / dispenser / water bottle.

The fact that the BlenderBottle is not dependant upon electrical power sources of any kind (not even batteries) means it can be used anywhere, anyplace, any time.  Use it “on the go.”  Use it at the game. Use it on the trail,  Use it on your next trip.  Use it when the power fails.  Use it as an emergency back-up to your regular blender. When used as a mixer or a blender you need merely add the desired ingredients, insert the patented BlenderBall and shake.  It’s as simple as that.  The lack of screw in blades, or other “get in the way” parts also means that cleanup is a breeze.  You can even wash the entire thing in your diswasher if you so desire.

A smoothie, especially on a hot day, can refresh your body. Smoothies are also nutritious and healthy because they are packed with vitamins, minerals, and protein. They provide liquid nutrition that is easily absorbed by the body.

Smoothies are also high in carbohydrates and fiber. Having a smoothie maker at home is convenient because smoothies are fast to prepare. This is perfect especially for kids who are picky eaters. Kids will never say no to smoothies.

Pressure canner

The best way to preserve meat, poultry, and vegetables longer is through canning. Canning is not as difficult as it sounds. You just need to have a reliable pressure canner that will do the job.

Canning is also recommended to prevent easy spoilage of foods with a low acid content, such as fish, vegetables, and meat. These foods spoil easily and canning disrupts the spoilage process. A pressure canner can also be used for fruit preserves such as jams and jellies.

Steam Juicers – More than a Juicer

Author: Gary Palmer

Back to Basics Steam Juicer

Use of your steam juicer doesn’t need to be a “once a year” type thing.  Though they are great for making juices for jams, jellies, or concentrates, jobs at which they excel, these handy devices can also be used as cookers.

In other words, you can use them to steam cook vegetables for an appetizing side dish, or even prepare an entire main course. Steam rice, fish, poultry, clams, cakes, puddings, and more. It’s a healthy way to cook and it’s a simple way to cook.

To transform your steam juicer into a steam cooker, simply remove the juice kettle portion of the unit.  That’s it.  You’re done.  You’re ready to go.  You will have left behind the water pan and the steamer basket, and those are what you require for steam cooking.

Would you like even more versatility?  Use the steamer basket as a colander for draining hot spaghetti or other pastas.  You’ll find it similarily useful for washing greens and other fruits and vegetables prior to meal preparation.  The water pan can easily be used to cook up soups and stews, or as an extra large pot for boiling potatoes or other vegetables for those special, family dinners.

Don’t limit your thinking.  Get your money’s worth.  That steam juicer really can become a kitchen utensil that is useful year round, rather than just seasonally.
